Born Ejigayehu Shibabaw in a small town in northwest Ethiopia, Gigi has risen to the height of success as a recording artist. As one of Ethiopia’s most popular contemporary singers, she has increased exposure to Ethiopian culture and music through the unforgettable interplay of her unique voice and heartfelt lyrics. Released in 2001, her self-titled major label debut features husband, producer and bass master Bill Laswell, plus Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Pharoah Sanders and Nicky Skopelitis.
