Wolof women in Senegal have been crafting beautiful baskets from typha stalks (cattails) and strips of palm fiber for generations. About 20 years ago, someone introduced plastic strips from a Dakar mat factory, and the weavers gladly adapted their technique to include this new material. Weaving baskets is specifically a women's craft among the Wolof, so we recommend using these pure white baskets at weddings, quinceaneras and christenings--the result is beautiful.
