Kisii Stone Pencil Box with Brass Emblems
#rmbs-010
Availability: In stock
In Kenya's southwestern hills, the Abagusii people live a simple agrarian lifestyle. Several families in the area supplement the household income by carving soapstone, known locally as kisii stone. This soft, metamorphic stone resembles talc, and can be easily carved with simple tools.
One common and timeless shape Gusii artisans create with almost machine precision is the pencil box. We work with a craft producer named Richard who operates a small craft workshop near Kisii Town. Richard excels at highlighting the natural beauty of the stone with small enhancements like beads, brass and shells.
