Each candle holder is hand carved by Abagusii, or Gusii, artisans in southwestern Kenya. Kisii stone, the local name for soapstone, is a soft stone that can be worked easily with simple tools. Several families in the Kisii area supplement their household income with soapstone carving sales, and Kisii is recognized as the heart of the soapstone industry in Kenya.
