These beautiful placemats are crafted by an association of over 100 rural Wolof women in the West African nation of Senegal. The Association uses a portion of profits to fund education, health care and reforestation projects that benefit all the villages, so purchasing their unique products is a win-win situation!
Each placemat is carefully woven in the coil style from typha stalks (cattails) and long strips of colorful plastic, often recycled from prayer mats and rugs or purchased new at a mat factory in Dakar. Traditional baskets and mats were bound with reeds, but the recycled material provides a broader range of colors and is much easier for the weavers to work. Another win-win!
Sold singly.
