Mpingo is the Swahili name for the tree known scientifically as Dalbergia melanoxylon. Also known as African blackwood, Mozambican ebony, grenadilla and zebrawood, mpingo wood is a rich dark wood that turns beautifully on a lathe.
In February of 2009, Leslie visited artisans in the northern Nampula Province of Mozambique to work on new designs, including this over-sized fluted cuff bracelet. Perhaps the most exquisite element of this exotic bracelet is the bold simplicity of form, which showcases the wood's grain and brings attention directly to the wrist.
