This graceful sculpture portrays an abstract feminine form through the natural contrast of sandalwood's rough, cracked inner bark and smooth, polished sapwood.
African sandalwood trees, known locally as tambotie, are one of the world's most beautiful species. Not only does the wood of the spirostachys africana tree emit a sweet, intoxicating aroma, but the warm color and rich grain make it a highly desirable carving wood. Post-war conservation measures allow artisans near Maputo to use their local hardwoods in a sustainable fashion to help bring global attention to their modern artistry.
