The Mozambican artisans who hand carve this beautiful sandalwood box were sadly unfamiliar with the shape of a giraffe's head when we sat down and worked together on this design. Giraffes no longer traverse Mozambique and are considered by many to be extinct in that country.
Having survived a long civil war during the 80s and 90s, Mozambicans are now enjoying greater stability and an economic upswing, and many have time to contemplate issues beyond daily survival. Issues that arise from our design meetings, like why there are no longer giraffes in Mozambique, are part of a cross-cultural exchange that encourages remembrance of the Earth's balance in our product development and our daily lives.
