Beware, Robbers ARE There. Author: Laura Winkleblack
Any tourist in Africa is a potential victim of petty crime. While there is no need to be paranoid about every person you meet or see, you should be aware of the dangers and take precautions to protect yourself and your belongings. Simple snatch thefts and robbery are the most common problems, and occur with much greater frequency in urban areas with the highest concentration of tourists.
Carry your passport, money and other important documents in a pouch against your skin, either around your waist or your neck. Leather pouches are most comfortable, and they will not allow your body moisture to seep through to your bills and papers. If you are carrying a purse, wear it across your shoulder and in front of your body. Similarly, backpacks and "fanny" packs should be worn in front of your body. These "tourist beacons" are almost irresistable to thieves, who can easily cut the straps and run. "Punk " like chains are helpful for keeping you attached to your possessions.
Never leave your gear unattended in any public place. It will not be there when you return! Hotel rooms with secure locks are generally safe for leaving cameras and other gear. The best bet is to use the hotel safe for your jewelry and extra cash or travelers checks, and only carry as much money as you will need for your outing.
