AIDS in Africa

An Epidemic Problem
Author: Laura Winkleblack

AIDS is a huge problem in Africa, compounded by limited resources, desperate poverty, and lack of education. The United Nations AIDS/HIV program (UNAIDS) reports that Sub Saharan African countries are the most affected. 3 million people in South Africa and over11% of the population of Kenya is infected with HIV.

For the traveler, it is extremely important to be aware of the risks. In Africa, HIV/AIDS is predominantly spread through heterosexual sexual activity. Avoid the temptations of the abundance of prostitutes, and always use a condom.

HIV virus is also transmitted by infected blood transfusions and dirty needles. Tatoos, piercings, and acupuncture pose a serious risk. For extra protection, take a pack of sterile needles and insist on using them if you need an injection.
