Blackwood Carving from Kenya and Mozambique
African blackwood, or mpingo, is a beautiful tree of the rosewood family that now grows mainly in East Africa's savannas and coastal lowlands. The wood is prized around the world for its brilliant tonal quality, and is used to create some of the world's most desirable woodwind instruments. Blackwood has also been a chosen wood among African carvers for centuries.
Many people mistakenly refer to blackwood as ebony, but ebony is a more brittle and less lustrous hardwood.
